Zantac is a medication commonly used to treat heartburn and acid reflux. In its generic form, Zantac is ranitidine. This drug is called an H2 blocker, meaning it decreases stomach acid by seeking to block histamine receptors in the stomach. Recent medical research suggests that a contaminant in Zantac, N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), is likely carcinogenic which means it could cause cancer. Available by prescription and over-the-counter (OTC), Zantac has been widely available for public use for years, ranging from acid reflux, heartburn, and other purposes. If you or a loved one developed cancer after using Zantac or a generic version, call the Memphis Zantac lawyers at Nahon, Saharovich & Trotz at 800-529-4004 for a free, no-obligation consultation.

What Kind of Cancer Can Zantac Cause?

Drugs with ranitidine like Zantac are linked with NDMA, and after conducting research and studies, the World Health Organization (WHO) identified NDMA as a probable carcinogen. Medical research, studies, and clinical trials have linked Zantac and ranitidine to several types of cancer, including:

  • Stomach cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Bladder cancer
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Colon cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Prostate cancer

Further, testing has linked Zantac to other adverse side effects, including hair loss, skin rashes, irregular heartbeat, liver failure, and disorders to the nervous system.

Has Zantac Been Taken Off the Market or Recalled?

In summer 2019, the FDA first became aware of independent lab testing that found NDMA in ranitidine, noting that higher NDMA levels in humans and sustained exposure could increase the risk of cancer. As it continued its research, the FDA issued warnings about Zantac and possible cancer risks in September 2019. In response, Walgreens, CVS, and Walmart voluntarily removed Zantac and its generic form from their shelves.

In April 2020, the FDA formally announced it was requesting that all manufacturers “withdraw all prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) ranitidine drugs from the market immediately.” They sent letters to all manufacturers of ranitidine, asking them to withdraw all of these drugs from the marketplace. Further, they encouraged all patients taking ranitidine and Zantac to consider other drugs approved for the same or similar use. If you were prescribed Zantac and still take it, you should contact your doctor immediately for further direction and alternate treatment options.

Zantac Lawsuits

If you or a loved one developed cancer after using Zantac, contact our Memphis Zantac attorneys to file a lawsuit. Prescription drug and pharmaceutical lawsuits can be complex in nature. There is a specific legal burden of proof that must be met in order to recover compensation, so you should speak with a law firm who has experience handling these type of product liability matters and consulting with qualified expert witnesses, such as medical researchers and doctors.

Zantac lawsuits have been filed against its manufacturers, including Sanofi and Boehringer Ingelheim, for concealing the risks between Zantac, ranitidine, NDMA, and cancer from consumers and healthcare providers. It has been alleged that the manufacturers knew and had reason to know about these risks, but they failed to properly warn the public that Zantac and ranitidine could produce NDMA in the human body. Further, the manufacturers are accused of designing a drug that is inherently dangerous to consumers.

If you took Zantac and have been diagnosed with cancer, you may be eligible to recover monetary damages with the assistance of a Zantac lawyer at our Memphis firm. Damages in these cases may include:

  • Medical bills and expenses resulting from your diagnosis
  • Lost wages or diminished future earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering (both past and future) caused by your injuries
  • Loss of enjoyment of life (both past and future) caused by your injuries
  • Punitive damages (depending on the facts)

If a loved one passed away from cancer, their claim does not go away or disappear. Instead, the law says that survivors (such as surviving spouse or children) can file a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of the legal heirs. Each state has its own wrongful death laws, including priority to file a claim and distribution of funds. A knowledgeable Zantac lawyer can help guide you through these legal issues.
