What Side Effects Does Oxbryta Cause?
Oxbryta is a brand-name version of voxelotor, an oral medication designed to treat sickle cell disease in adults and children. Sickle cell disease is an inherited disorder involving misshaped red blood cells. Oxbryta acts by inhibiting hemoglobin polymerization, which causes red blood cells to become misshapen.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an accelerated approval to Oxbryta in November 2019. Clinical research studies have found a higher rate of death among voxelotor users compared to sickle cell disease patients not taking the drug. Clinical trials also reported a higher rate of vaso-occlusive crisis in Oxbryta users than in the placebo group.
A vaso-occlusive crisis is a severe and painful complication of sickle cell disease that occurs when misshapen red blood cells block blood flow to the body’s tissues. This can cause damage to the liver, kidneys, lungs, and other organs.
The manufacturer also reports the following potential Oxbryta side effects:
- Severe rash
- Headache
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Fever
Why You Might Be Eligible for an Oxbryta Lawsuit
The FDA approved Oxbryta through an accelerated approval pathway in 2019. This accelerated approval was meant to address a critical need for sickle cell disease treatment. Limited studies conducted before the accelerated approval showed a promising increase in hemoglobin, but follow-up studies were necessary to confirm Oxbryta’s safety.
Pfizer acquired Global Blood Therapeutics, the original manufacturer, in 2022 and voluntarily withdrew Oxbryta from the market in September 2024, citing safety concerns. For some patients, however, the withdrawal came too late.
You may be eligible to file an Oxbryta lawsuit if you or a loved one suffered a vaso-occlusive crisis or other serious side effects while taking the drug. The ongoing Oxbryta lawsuits allege that Pfizer failed to update its label promptly to show the drug’s newly revealed risks. As a result, patients were unaware of the potential dangers of taking Oxbryta and unable to make informed decisions about their treatment.
There are also concerns about inadequate testing before Pfizer released Oxbryta to the market. Some patients claim that the drug should have gone through more rigorous testing before being made available to the public.
What To Expect From an Oxbryta Lawsuit
You can recover damages in an Oxbryta lawsuit for any losses you suffered due to the drug’s side effects. These may include:
- Medical expenses for treating Oxbryta complications.
- Lost wages and earning capacity due to Oxbryta’s effects on your ability to work.
- Physical pain and emotional distress.
- Funeral and burial expenses if a loved one died as a result of Oxbryta complications.
Various factors can affect your Oxbryta lawsuit compensation, including the extent of your damages, your lawyer’s experience, and the quality of available evidence. The Oxbryta lawsuits are relatively new, so it is not yet possible to calculate the average settlement amount. Depending on the severity of your injuries and available evidence, Oxbryta lawsuits could result in substantial compensation.
When you turn to NST Law with your Oxbryta injury case, we’ll guide you through each step of the process. Our Oxbryta lawsuit lawyers will investigate Pfizer’s liability and gather evidence to support your claim for damages. We’ll also calculate your losses and work with experts to determine a fair settlement amount.
After we file the lawsuit, we’ll negotiate with Pfizer for an out-of-court settlement on your behalf. If Pfizer refuses to make a fair settlement offer, we are ready to represent your interests in court.
