KAT Bus Collides with FedEx Truck in Knoxville

A Knoxville Area Transit bus and FedEx truck crashed on May 18, 2021, prompting a police investigation. The wreck occurred in Knoxville, Tennessee, at Tennessee Avenue and Johnston Street.

Knoxville police initially concluded the FedEx truck failed to yield to the KAT bus, and as a result, the KAT bus was unable to avoid the crash. Following this impact, the KAT bus crashed into a residential building with two people inside. The FedEx truck crashed into a telephone pole.

Several were injured in the crash, including at least two people on the bus. Due to heavy damage to the home, firefighters had to help the occupants exit via ladder.

Accidents involving commercial vehicles and buses often require police investigation in order to get to the bottom of what happened. Police will want to speak with the parties involved as well as any witnesses. Many times, the officers will take photographs, measurements, and diagram the accident scene. If significant injuries are involved, a special unit known as the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) will conduct a special investigation. This Tennessee agency will conduct a thorough investigation in addition to a comprehensive report.

If you have been involved in an accident caused by a bus or commercial vehicle, special considerations can apply to your situation. In Tennessee, an employer can be held liable for the negligence of their employees committed during the course and scope of employment. Commercial drivers are subject to special federal regulations. Expert witnesses may be needed to evaluate the situation and help determine liability.
