Side-impact accidents in Tennessee are sometimes called T-bone accidents. Since there is less metal and material on the sides of cars, as compared to the front or rear of the vehicle, which have room to absorb impact, side-impact collisions often cause catastrophic injuries or even death. There is little to mitigate the force of the impact, and the driver or passenger on the side of the impact may experience significant pain both during and after the accident. The experienced Memphis car accident lawyers of Nahon, Saharovich & Trotz can evaluate the facts of an accident and provide aggressive legal representation to those injured by the negligence of another.

Seeking Compensation After a Side-Impact Accident

In a side-impact accident, one vehicle strikes another in a perpendicular direction. The body can be snapped from side to side and takes a moment to catch up with the direction of the force. A seatbelt may help the driver from being thrown from the car, but there is little material to absorb all that force. If the force is too great, the result may be whiplash, fractures, organ damage, or sprains. Sometimes the car that gets hit is pushed into a secondary accident with a stationary object like a concrete median or a moving object like another car in traffic. Sometimes a rollover crash occurs.

If you are directly hit in a side-impact accident, you may be able to recover damages by bringing a lawsuit based on negligence. You will have to show that the other driver owed you a duty to use reasonable care and failed to meet that obligation, resulting in your injuries. If, for example, the other car ran a red light, thereby breaching the duty to follow traffic signals, and hit you while you were driving through the intersection, you will likely be able to establish negligence.

Your case may contain certain complexities if there is a secondary collision with another vehicle as a result of the side-impact accident. Multiple drivers may be pointing the finger at each other, making the responding police officer’s investigation much more difficult. In complex multi-car crashes, an accident reconstruction expert may be retained. These experts can visit the scene, inspect the vehicles, and recreate how the accident happened. These reconstructions can take the street characteristics, physical damage to the cars, and speed into account.
