Fatal car crashes across the country rose for a second straight year in 2016, hitting a nine-year high. Across the State of Tennessee, total accidents have followed a similar trajectory. Similarly, fatal accidents in the state declined after 2007, but they increased steadily the next several years. Between 2012-2014, the number of total accidents remained stagnant, averaging 174,274. However, in 2015, that figure shot up to 197,198, and then jumped to 206,380 in 2016. The next highest days were Thursday (622), Sunday (595), and Tuesday/Wednesday (both 584). In terms of time of day, in 2016, accidents took place at all hours, from midnight to midnight. The most accidents occurred between 3:00-5:59 p.m. (1,017). The next-highest time block was 12:00-2:59 p.m. (789). As one may expect, the least amount of accidents occurred between 3:00-5:59 a.m. (120).
